The bank feed in QuickBooks is a beautiful thing when it's working properly. However, when it's not working correctly, it's similar to having a broken down vehicle for anyone that has to handle their day to day bookkeeping. Here are three things I do immediately to troubleshoot bank feeds.
I initially log in to the official banking site. Sometimes upon logging in, your bank will have a notification published of a known issue they are actively working on. Or, they may have published a new agreement they want you to accept. Just recently, my bank feed stopped working. After logging, I had to accept a new agreement. After doing so, my bank feed updated on the next try.
If option 1 doesn't work, I will try a different internet browser or clear my browsing data. I've noticed clearing my browsing data occasionally helps QuickBooks run quicker. As far as internet browsers go, I typically use Chrome, Firefox, and Edge in that order.
If the neither of the above options work, I will typically restart my PC and try them one more time. If it still fails, I will start with contacting QuickBooks via chat support. I find their chat support to be much better than sitting on hold. They will usually be able to tell you whether the issue is on them or the bank. If it's a bank issue, then you can reach out to them as well. However, I will usually give it 24 hours at this point. Since QuickBooks is such a popular software, it doesn't take long for the masses to begin contacting their banks when an issue arises.
I have seen longer outages over the years which led me to manually updating the bank feeds until they were corrected. Depending on your situation, it may be best to wait until the bank feeds are working again. However, it is important to ensure everything has populated once they start working. If your reconciliation is off at the month end and you have had bank feed issues, that would be the first place I would look to see if there are any discrepancies.
I hope these 3 suggestions will assist you in case you encounter any difficulties with your bank feeds. If you have discovered any other solutions that have worked for you, please don't hesitate to share!
